Dubsado form design & workflow planning with a Cake Artist
A high end, luxury customer experience for artisan handmade cake orders
Elizabeth Sund of Sundbakes might just have the world’s most delicious job. She handpaints mouthwateringly gorgeous cakes for lucky customers in Minot, North Dakota (Her medium? Top-quality buttercream), as well as creating beautiful macarons and handpainted cookies. All from her home bakery business.
Dubsado is a great fit for artisan handmade businesses. You get a lot for its relatively low cost (your enquiry form, questionnaires, contract, email templates, customer database, and more all in one place), and it’s designed especially for micro-businesses where the client is likely to have direct contact with you, the business owner.
Elizabeth is very systems-minded and super motivated to learn alllll of the ins and outs of Dubsado, so we both new right away that a complete done-for-you setup wouldn’t be the right choice for her. Instead, Elizabeth opted for a VIP day, where we could zone in on the areas where she most needed help with her DIY setup.
Every VIP day is different, and this time we decided to focus on:
- An order enquiry form (or in US English, “inquiry form”) that would provide on-demand price estimates to potential clients. (Allowing Elizabeth to stop wasting time with requests for grocery store prices.) Importantly, though, the form needed to allow clients to easily skip over irrelevant questions about items that they aren’t ordering — something that isn’t natively possible in Dubsado without a bit of custom code!
- Taking the customer journey Elizabeth had already designed, and translating it into step-by-step, action-by-action Dubsado content and workflows

Before
“Before setting up Dubsado I needed to do everything myself, and I had a lot of redundancies because I worried about forgetting something important. Those redundancies were effective, but wasted so much time.
“I wasn’t sure how I would be able to grow my business because I did not think I could scale with that system. As I received more orders, I knew I needed to find a way to automate a lot of my administrative tasks.”
The VIP day
Elizabeth’s VIP day included:
- Custom form design for Sundbakes’s order enquiry form, including code for conditional logic. This allows customers to only answer the questions that are relevant to them (e.g. only customers who selected that they’d like to purchase macarons are asked questions about macaron decoration and flavours).
- Workflow planning for Sundbakes’s custom order process, giving the client a high-end experience (and taking the hassle out of admin for Elizabeth) right from the point of enquiry right up to picking up their cake.
After our VIP day, Elizabeth then created all of the additional content (forms, email templates, schedulers, etc.) with reference to my video instructions, and connected it all up by creating the planned workflows inside of Dubsado.

Other than that, I haven’t used any time communicating with someone who has not gone on to easily pay for their order, or anyone who wants a type of cake I do not offer.“
