I accepted a long time ago that in business there’s often no “right” order to do things in.
When you first start, you ask yourself questions like: Should I build an audience even though I have nothing to sell yet? Or should I work on my offers even though I don’t have an audience to sell them to?
Over time, the chicken/egg questions don’t necessarily become any easier:
- Should I build this course and then launch it, or should I launch it and then build it?
- Should I rebrand, or sort out my systems first?
- Should I write email templates for my new service before or after I’ve worked with a few clients?
- Should I set up automations right away, or do things manually for a while first?
Here’s a few rules of thumb I’ve come up with along the way:
- If I need to buy myself time, create things in the order the customer will experience them (e.g. write the services page of my website first, then create the intake questionnaire)
- If I want the easiest and least stressful creation experience, create things in the opposite order to how the customer will experience them (e.g. create the course, then the sales page, then the promo posts)
- If I find myself procrastinating, just do whatever’s most exciting first. (Then use that momentum to do the less exciting bits.)
These rules of thumb help me make decisions and get moving when there’s no “right” answer about what to do first.
Sometimes, though, there is a “right” order
After working for years on clients’ systems setups, I’ve started to see patterns about what does and doesn’t work. Sometimes, business owners create extra work for themselves by simply doing things in the wrong order.
