Book review: Happy Money

Jan 29, 2018

OK, so money generally doesn’t buy happiness. But could it buy happiness, if only we knew the right things to spend it on? Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton answer with a resounding “yes” in Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending.

The book explores a range of fascinating research about satisfied spending, and offers the reader five core principles for turning money into happiness. Some of this advice re-affirms conventional wisdom, but plenty of it is surprising and the details are always illuminating.

One piece of information I found interesting was that people who think of themselves as well-travelled are less likely to get enjoyment out of inexpensive pleasures in their hometowns. So if you are a world traveller, how do you shift your mindset to get enjoyment out of the simpler things in life? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
